The Dark Knight Rises – A Brief(ish) History of Bane

Now, I’m just speculating here.  Christopher Nolan and David Goyer are way better at this than I am, so they probably have something much better that I haven’t even thought of.  Trust me, you don’t want to see the Batman movie I would make.  Sure, it would have its moments, but it would also include a subplot about  Batman and I being best friends.  And by “sublot”, I mean “plot”.

That said, it seems to me that there’s a strong connection to Nolan’s version of Batman.  Bruce adopted that specific identity because he’s afraid of bats.  In fact, his fear of bats is what put his parents in the alley at the wrong time.  (Though Batman Begins shows that they were specifically targeted, so Joe Chill would have got to them sooner or later regardless.)  It’s all about dealing with his fear.  And what was Bane afraid of?  The demon bat in his dreams.  They’re both rooted in the fear of this imagery, and that sets Bane up as a dark mirror of Batman.

My favorite part of this was that Bane was in prison serving his father’s life sentence.

  2. That never fails to crack me up – it’s a pretty sweet system of criminal justice. “Man, that guy’s hard to catch. Wait, he’s got a kid? Let’s just lock him up. You want to get a sandwich?”

In a way, it makes SOME sense. Maybe his parental guilt would lead him to turn himself in.
