The Cape – A Look at TV’s Best (and Worst) Superheroes

4.  The Greatest American Hero – Given a super-suit by aliens who forgot to include an instruction book, Ralph Hinkley never came up with a codename or even a definitive list of powers, but he had two things going for him.  (Three, if you count a swell white-guy afro.)  First, he was dating Connie Selleca, and in the 80s, that was the best it got.  Second, he had one of TV’s all time most awesome theme songs (which was later used for George Costanza’s answering machine message).  The show itself was a weird mix – creator Stephen J. Cannell wanted more character comedy and lighthearted stories and the network wanted Ralph saving the world every week.  Still, while the show has not aged gracefully, it’s really pretty charming.  And Ralph’s wide array of powers means that if everybody on this list had a fight, he’d more than hold his own.

  1. You know what might have made Ghettoman even more offensive? If he’d had a partner named Warsaw Ghetto Man and his super power was sending back soup in a deli or something. I can’t believe that even existed!
