When I sat down to write this after seeing the group on their big reunion tour last weekend, I couldn’t help but think of an actual rock critic, the late Lester Bangs, who was played by Phillip Seymour Hoffman in the movie Almost Famous. He had a couple of great lines in the film that seemed to encapsulate the evening for me. When we meet him onscreen, he is comparing The Doors and The Guess Who…one a serious rock band, one a pop act.
“Give me the Guess Who. They got the courage to be drunken buffoons, which makes them poetic.”
Yeah, like that time Donnie Wahlberg trashed a hotel room! Drunken buffoons! But mostly dancing buffoons. And they do it better than any of you probably could, so you should respect the dancing.
