BEST NEW HOME FOR ONE-SEASON WONDERS – Cougar Town has pretty much built its cast by employing actors who starred in single-season shows that we loved. Swingtown’s Josh Hopkins, Freaks and Geeks’ Busy Phillipps, Dan Byrd of Aliens in America, and Brian Van Holt of John from Cincinnati all found sanctuary here, and were probably very confused when the second season began.
WORST AD CAMPAIGN FOR A GREAT SHOW – FX had a rare misstep with Terriers. Not the show itself, which was excellent, but the mystifying way they chose to promote it. For the longest time, the TV ads showed only a small dog either walking across the screen or chewing on something. No indication as to what the series was about it, who was in it, or who made it. And just to make it extra crazy, Terriers was produced by Shawn Ryan – the man who created The Shield and arguably the reason that FX even has original programming. We can only guess that it was inspired by the success of the minimalist promos for Louie, thought those at least showed the star and hinted at the themes of the series. FX usually has brilliant promotional campaigns, but they dropped the ball here.
