Tom Waits Week: Mule Variations and Beyond (1999-present)

Alice (2002) – In 2002, Tom Waits released two albums on the same day. Both of them were soundtracks to plays, much like Black Rider, only they feel more like his own work than that album. In fact, the albums only tangentially touch on the themes of each play, which in the case of Alice is the sexual obsessions of Lewis Carroll. You’d never pick that up from the album itself, though.
