Besides the sheer scope of the plot, the humor is sharp as ever. Separating the main characters for much of the time, which they could rarely do in the half-hour episodes, brings out their best. Farnsworth and Wernstrom are just as funny as allies as there are when they’re enemies. Bender’s time with the League of Robots is hilarious, and gives him a chance to do something besides drink and steal. (Which is not to say that he doesn’t drink and steal. It’s Bender, after all.) I particularly like how Bender remains oblivious to the main plot right up until the final act. Fry is sweetly dopey, and his new relationship is funny and disturbing. Leela’s scenes tend to be more action-oriented, but her arc involves a soup-bootlegger and “elbow talons”. She keeps the plot moving but still provides some great jokes along the way.
