Not that it’ll make Alan Moore feel any better, but the Watchmen movie actually turned out pretty good. True, even a completely faithful, 100% successful adaptation would have thrown the reclusive writer into fits, but considering that his work had previously been adapted into the disastrous League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, the witless From Hell, and V for Vendetta, which managed to make almost exactly the opposite point that Moore intended, at this point it has to be a victory that Rorschach didn’t end up with a wacky sidekick.
This is especially surprising considering the director is Zack Snyder, who actually found a way to dumb down Frank Miller’s 300. Over the last twenty years, more versatile directors like Terry Gilliam, Paul Greengrass, and Terry Gilliam (again) have been attached to the adaptation, and they’ve deemed the book unfilmable.
