Schuester is played by Matthew Morrison, a Broadway star who originated the role of Link Larkin in Hairspray. I’m looking forward to hearing him sing in an upcoming episode. Another Broadway star, Lea Michele, who had the lead in recent Tony winner Spring Awakening, plays Rachel Berry, the daughter of “two dads”, born through a surrogate. Rachel is very reminiscent of Tracy Flick in Election. She’s aggressive, ambitious and intense to a fault, but she’s also very talented and endearing in her way. When we meet her, she explains that she is the one who orchestrated the former director’s ouster because she didn’t get a solo. In her estimation, “being anonymous is worse than being poor”, and she posts a video per day on her myspace page in the hopes of getting discovered.
