Community – We’ve been anticipating the Pulp Fiction tribute episode for weeks now, and of course, Community gave us something completely unexpected. Jeff planned a Tarantino-themed birthday party for Abed, only to find that a traumatic experience on the set of Cougar Town made Abed realize just how shallow his life had been up to this point. So instead, he wanted to have a “real conversation”, which pushed Jeff into some surprising confessions.
It was a clever episode, and Abed’s reflections on his pop culture-obsessed life hit a little close to home. And after last season’s Goodfellas episode, we expected this one to be entirely built around a Pulp Fiction homage. They threw that out from the first scene with Jeff’s voiceover narration. This episode was a big clever concept wrapped around a smaller, more obvious clever concept. And we have to mention both Shirley and Pierce, who appeared as Jules and the Gimp, respectively. Shirley saw Pulp Fiction on an airplane and only knew it as 30-minute movie about friends, dancing, and milkshakes. And Pierce had never seen it at all, and didn’t know whether the Gimp was the hero or the love interest. Hee.
