The Best TV Shows on TV: TV’s Moments of Joy “It’s Friday! Friday!”

The story is disjointed and silly, with dialogue that would have been more polished coming from a fifth grader with a dark side.  Characters often have multiple versions of the same basic conversation, and they’re all just complete dopes.  Truly, this abomination has to be seen to be believed, no words can really do it justice. And you have to power through to get to the ending, which is just preposterous.  Here’s a clip we hope will pique your interest.

Parenthood — While this episode was sort of low key, we were very impressed by the performances of Mae Whitman and Erika Christensen as well as how spot on the little touches were, as usual.  Amber is starting to spiral downward after not getting into college and Mae is doing a fabulous job at playing her as angry, disappointed and humiliated all at once.  Given that she’s been breaking our hearts since she played Meg Ryan’s pre-school aged daughter in When A Man Loves A Woman, this shouldn’t be a surprise.  Next week, it looks like things will get much worse for Amber, and that scares us.  Julia was coping with her bad news–she’s unlikely to ever conceive again due to some scarring on her uterus–by basically smothering Sydney with more attention than her only child wants from Mom.  When Sydney asks her to back off (not in those words, of course), Julia finally cracks, and weeps quietly in her mother’s arms.  This show doesn’t let Bonnie Bedelia do much lately, but this scene with no dialogue was still gold.
