As for niche vs. phenomenon, that’s something I think a lot about. Between the number of choices and the array of possible methods of viewing, we’re never going to have another Seinfeld finale. We’re no longer compelled to watch something at the time it airs, which takes away from the universality of the experience. Unless you get something like LOST, where there was so much build-up that you had to watch it when it aired lest you have it spoiled, we’re not all watching things at the same time anymore. And my perspective tends to be skewed – it is hard for me to imagine that there are people who don’t watch Mad Men and 30 Rock, but the numbers indicate that the majority of people actually don’t.
