The Best Shows on TV

TV’s Moments of Joy – Happy ValenBirthiversary!

So what made us happy on TV this week?

House – When the best episode ever of your series is titled “Three Stories”, you have to know you’re raising expectations when you use the title “Two Stories”.  That’s what House did this week, and it delivered with a funny and twisty episode.  At a Catholic school, two kids busted for kissing and skipping class go to the principal’s office where House is also waiting.  So why is our favorite doctor in trouble with the principal?  Well, that unfolds as House tells the kids the story of his visit to Career Day, in which he told the class about a strange case.  The whole episode is him telling a story of a story that he told.  And in both layers of storytelling, he’s constantly interrupted by questions from the kids (One of whom is an expert in “old movies”.  You know, like Pulp Fiction.)  And in all levels of reality, House is more interested in finding out why Cuddy is mad at him than in treating his patient who literally coughed up a lung.  It was fun to put the pieces together (Why is he calling himself “Dr. Harani” at Career Day?), and it made for a really strong episode with a powerful emotional climax.  It was House at its best, and an excellent successor to the Best Episode Ever.
