The premiere was a delight, with a nice mix of gentle humor (Bob helping the health inspector out of his parking spot) with really over-the-top bits (Daughter Louise promotes a burger called “The Child Molester” which “comes with candy”). Like Home Movies, a lot of the humor comes from conversation and people struggling to find the right words, which makes for a nice counterpoint to the Seth McFarlane style that’s dominated FOX Sundays for so long. It’s very funny and kind of sweet, and despite us not being blown away by the character design initially, there are some really impressive visual moments. The standout is a conversation between Bob and wife Linda as they stand on opposite sides of a window. Showing the conversation from Bob’s perspective, with his reflection next to Linda, is a simple but effective trick, and kind of beautiful in it own way.
