And then there are the bits that aren’t necessarily meant to be funny – the one I can’t shake is the episode where Louis and his brother have dinner with their mother. Louis is ready to cut all ties with the awful woman, but his brother is desperate for her approval. And when pressed, she can’t even bring herself to say that she loves him. It was upsetting and haunting, and something we really haven’t seen before.
Louie spent the summer making us laugh and cringe and defying our expectations. It’s a strange and wonderful show.
