The Venture Bros. – You can check out the Dossier this week for more on “Everybody Comes to Hank’s”, but we have to give it a brief mention here. This episode was disturbing all kinds of levels, including a scene in which one of the titular Brothers loses his virginity, but that’s why we love it. Also, the art design for this episode was really beautiful.
This episode had some lengthy noir sections, and whenever Hank put on his fedora, the whole thing shifted to black-and-white. But instead of just shooting uncolored cels, which is the standard just , they filmed colored cels in black-and-white. Which seems like a small distinction, but it leads to a much wider range of grays. It was really striking. And somehow, they made the light flicker just a little on the b&w scenes, which made it seem more like an old movie. It was very cool, and just shows how much effort Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer are putting into every aspect of the series.
