Lights Out – This is really going to stretch the definition of “Moments of Joy”, since FX’s new boxing drama is the bleakest thing we’ve seen on TV since The Wire spent an entire season detailing the failings of the public school system. Patrick “Lights” Leahy is a retired prizefighter who wiped out his savings through some bad investments (mostly because he trusted his idiot brother). Even worse, as the series begins, he’s diagnosed with pugilistic dementia, which could result in permanent brain damage. He’s taking humiliating endorsements jobs to make ends meet and keep his family secure, and even considers working as muscle for a local loan shark.
