The Best Shows on TV

TV’s Moments of Joy – Treble Dukes!

It’s one of the most depressing shows on TV right now, but don’t let that stop you – it’s another great show from FX.

30 Rock – Last week’s episode was hilarious all the way through, including Liz and Tracy arguing to the tune of “Uptown Girl” and a really elaborate shot at Mel Gibson.   But rather than recounting every last joke, we have to mention our favorite bit.  Tracy Jordan, now an Oscar nominee, announced his plan to buy an island.  Because “All the crazy A-listers own islands – Nicolas Cage, Celine Dion, Charles Widmore…”.  Here’s a tip – if you want to make it to Moments of Joy, work in a funny Lost reference. American Idol–Not everyone who participates in this column is watching American Idol, and that’s OK.  Regardless, we have to point out how great new judge Steven Tyler has been in his first couple of weeks on the show.  Sure, he’s leered inappropriately at a few teenage girls, but this the lead singer of Aerosmith, for crying out loud; wouldn’t it be strange if he didn’t do that?  What’s been cool and surprising is that Steven has seemed to take the job quite seriously, and treated almost every contestant with care and compassion.  Plus he clearly just digs music, which is neat to see. When Chris, who came complete with a tragic backstory that involved his fiance having suffered a traumatic brain injury in a car accident, came in and sang “Breakeven” by The Script, Steven grooved right along.  And then, when Chris was urged to bring his fiance into the room to meet the judges, it was Steven who went in for a hug and whispered sweetly in her ear that Chris sings so well because he sings to her every day.  It was a genuine, touching moment that showed why Steven is suited for this gig and is helping revitalize Idol in its 10th season.
