–And another major first appearance, though it doesn’t seem like it right away – Phantom Limb! He dominates Season Two, and in a couple of episodes, he’s going to be creating some havoc for the Monarch. Basically, his limbs are invisible. He has arms and legs, you just can’t see them. (And there’s an explanation for that, but not until Season Three.) Now, obviously his name is a play on the sensation that amputees experience, but his costume is based on that of Lee Falk’s Phantom. (Who you might know from the Billy Zane movie from a couple of years ago. Slam Evil!) In the future, we’ll also learn that he’s descended from the French pulp villain, Fantomas. So he’s a double parody with a joke name. And a hilarious visual. By the way, it’s clear from this scene that he and Dr. Girlfriend have a history. The Monarch’s reaction to him seemingly doesn’t really fit with later continuity, but I think it’s defensible. Monarch seems not to know him, or of any past relationship with Dr. Girlfriend, but in Season Three we’ll learn that the Monarch first met her when he was henching for Phantom Limb. However, if I remember my facts, he never admitted to her that he was a henchman and cooked up the Monarch identity to impress her. Thus, you could make the case that he’s just playing along with his long-running ruse.
