LOST: Pre-Game for “What They Died For”

I’m going to be honest with you – I can’t really come up with a good way to organize this Pre-Game. Since everything I have to say is centered around Jacob and his brother and his crazy fake mom, I can’t really group it point by point. So I’m just going to try to get out what I’ve been thinking about and try to structure it in a way that doesn’t make me seem like a crazy guy.
And I always recommend that you go over to Spectacularry to check out what spunkybuddy Larry Young has to say, but I think this week it’s absolutely essential. We’re focusing on some different things this week, and he has some ideas that never even occurred to me. I’d also recommend that you read the comments, because he goes over one of those lists of Lost’s unanswered questions that every magazine and website has been putting out lately and absolutely demolishes it. Basically, he answers almost every question from the list and points out the questions that are just kind of dumb. It’s really something to see.
This episode is going to be something that people like me will be debating for a long time to come. For example, we’ve seen hieroglyphics that depict Smokey, and very old structures like the temple and the statue have handy smoke tubes and vents built-in. The episode implies that this is a cycle – the Island always has a protector, who passes all their knowledge and power down to a successor before they die. As spunkybuddy Larry Young notes, Crazy Mom fulfills the role of both Jacob and Smokey. And a little bit of Smoke-Power would account for her ability to cave in a well and slaughter a village. For most of the history of the Island, the person who makes the rules and the person who kills the undesirables would seem to be the same person. But Jacob created a nemesis for himself by throwing his brother into the cave.
