The first episode of A&E’s Breakout Kings incorporates crime drama, a Batman ringtone, a fart joke, a woman in lingerie, and Liam McPoyle, so there’s really no chance that I wasn’t going to like it. All that aside, the new series from Prison Break producers Nick Santora and Matt Olmstead boasts a clever premise, a great cast, and solid character work. It hits the sweet spot between quirky and gritty, as if the USA Network and FX somehow managed to produce a child.
A&E sent copies of the first and third episode for review, and as a quick aside, I can’t even tell you how excited I am to get screener copies. I have very few goals in life, and one of those goals is to watch TV shows before they air. Mission accomplished.
