THE GENERAL AWESOMENESS AWARD – To Joel McHale, who cracks us up in two of our weekly TV obsessions – Community and The Soup. We can’t remember what our lives were like before Joel, but we assume they were pretty dire.
THE SERIOUS THEOLOGICAL CONUNDRUM AWARD – Lost’s Martin Keamy, after being killed off back in Season Four, died again in this year’s Timeline X storyline. Being dead twice is impressive, but once we learned that Timeline X was the afterlife, well, that’s a real head-scratcher. What happens when you die in the afterlife? We’re sure Keamy’s soul is on some plane of existence, mumbling menacingly. ENTERTAINER OF THE YEAR – Jon Hamm is the king of the world, as far as we’re concerned. Not only did he blow us away every week on Mad Men as Don Draper and as an FBI Agent in Ben Affleck’s The Town, he showed us some major comedy and even some dancing chops in 2010. He started the year off with his second SNL hosting gig, and nailed it. We could watch that “Hamm & Buble” sketch on a loop. He hosted again in the fall, and surprised us with an interesting Robin Williams impression. He also turned up three more times on 30 Rock as Dr. Drew Baird (now with hook hands!), including the live show. Plus, there was that spectacular Emmy opening number (how much did we love him “backin’ that ass up” for Betty White?!) and his surprise cameo on the season finale of Childrens Hospital, where he basically did the end of Tootsie. He even popped up for an unbilled surprise appearance in The A-Team, which is about as far removed from Mad Men as you can get. As if that wasn’t enough, he lent his voice talents to Shrek Forever After and showed up on The Simpsons! He even popped up in the first episode of Conan, interviewing the unemployed Conan O’Brien for a position at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce. And don’t forget his many winning talk show appearances all year; never underestimate the power of a regular (albeit tremendously handsome) guy as a great interview.
