Tom Waits Week: Things Get Weird (1983-1993)
That wraps up the second phase of Tom’s career. There’s a six year gap between Black Rider and his next album, Mule Variations. There, Waits’ sound changes drastically again. His next albums are classified as “contemporary folk”, which isn’t a great description, but it’ll do for now. It’s a more stripped-down sound, but still featuring constant experimentation. Join us next time as Tom wins another Grammy, releases two albums on the same day, and beatboxes. I am not making this up.
