TV’s Best Bars

Cheers Boston, MA Owner Sam “Mayday” Malone has been running this Boston institution (est. 1895) for well over a quarter century, give or take a few years of corporate ownership in the late 80s, during which Malone attempted to circumnavigate the earth.  Through it all, the bar has maintained all the charm of an old fashioned pub and remained a comfortable hang out for both regulars and occasional visitors.  Cheers is also happy to have outlived storied rival, Gary’s Old Towne Tavern.  (There’s still a staircase connecting Cheers to Melville’s, a fine seafood restaurant known for its outstanding cuisine, if you can take the stuffy attitude.)  If you pick the right time of day to stop by for a brew, you might get to see Cheers legends Cliff Clavin, a retired postal worker and purveyor or obscure factoids; and Norm Peterson, a perennially underemployed accountant who has a reserved barstool and is generally greeted by name. Four Stars (Cheers)

  1. The Regal Beagle!

  2. You just heard two people simultaneously kicking themselves for forgetting that one…

  3. DAMMIT!

  4. Bob’s Burgers sells beer!

    • But I guess it wasn’t on the air yet when this was published. I just wanted to give the Belcher’s a shout out. (Also it’s a restaurant, not technically a bar)

      • They definitely would have made the list these days! It’s a weird detail that they rarely acknowledge, but it’s very funny that Bob has a liquor license.
