Commentary: Why Do I Love TV? (Mar 17)

Let’s fast forward to more recent times, when I feel TV is really in the midst of a renaissance. Changes in technology and media have made the whole entertainment industry bigger and more diverse than it’s ever been.  No longer are broadcasters the only game in town, so programs that cater to the lowest common denominator aren’t the only options, although, let’s face it, they are more prevalent than ever, too.  I find myself wanting to be a blend of Lorelai Gilmore, Liz Lemon, Pam Beesley and Joan, the office manager on Mad Men.  I marvel at how the sitcom has evolved as an art form from the strict formula of set-up and punch line accompanied by a laugh track to a genre that operates on such a cerebral level at times that many don’t even get the jokes.   And the whole reality TV phenomenon?  It is here to stay, and for every train wreck it turns out, there are equally engrossing travelogues like The Amazing Race and Survivor or truly creative competitions like Project Runway and Top Chef.
