I think it’s just the manufactured patriotism that gets to me. You have to admit that Michael Bay knows how to use special effects to evoke emotions and stir up his audiences. You throw in a bunch of flag waving, and I’m unable to keep from tearing up, at least a little (hence, Independence Day.) The more cynical you are, the less moved you will be, but if you’re in the mood to just sit there and ignore all rational thought, you can be entertained by it all. Or want to throw things. I don’t know if there’s a gray area.
