I guess I’m easily manipulated by silly plot contrivances involving saving the earth (well, preferably the parts in the USA, and trapped in the 1950’s…no one seems too concerned when pieces of the meteor decimate a fishing town somewhere in Asia as well as Paris), romance, and father/child relationships. I even bought the one where Will Patton’s son is told he’s just a salesman by his ex, until he’s a bona fide hero; then she just hops on the bandwagon. No mixed messages there!
That brings us to the relationship between Harry and Grace. Liv Tyler is a decent actress, especially when she is required to look pretty and pout. She sells the big goodbye scene over the monitor, where he says he won’t be coming back and she whimpers, “Daddy, no!” as he says he wishes he could be there to walk her down the aisle and that he’ll check in on her from time to time. It’s a sweet scene. Of course, I kept imagining she was talking to Steven Tyler the whole time, and the brick of Wisconsin cheddar that is the Aerosmith hit “I Don’t Want to Miss A Thing” didn’t help matters, but what are you gonna do? It’s a stupid formula movie, I’m a sap, and I’ll just have to live with my shame.
