She finds a couple (in the Penny Saver) who have the good fortune to be played by Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman. Garner especially departs from her usual type of character, and is quite affecting as Vanessa, who’s a little nuts, really. She just wants a baby so much that it gets into every aspect of her life, and she comes off as desperate, but believable. Jason Bateman brings his usual sarcasm, but he’s darker than we’re used to seeing him. What both characters end up bringing to the story is unexpected, and I’m thrilled to see two of my favorites play against type and still be so darned good.
