This episode is set up in a really strange way. Trump talks with the previous winners after the interviews have taken place, and this is a framing sequence for flashbacks to the interviews. So we jump from everybody waiting for the interviews, to the interviews already being over, to the interviews. It’s like Season Six of LOST. At what point are Lil Jon and Meat Loaf going to be a pair of undercover detectives in Los Angeles? (OMG–if you think I don’t already have a script outline for that one…–Myndi)
So let’s see how the John Rich interview went down. Piers’ first question: “Who would you chuck under a bus?” Hee. John takes one second to name Meat Loaf. Joan asks him what he’s contributed, and he talks about his skills as a writer. Piers says he’s not impressed by the fact that a songwriter can write. John talks about his balls, because he’s Stephen Colbert. Piers reminds me of why I loved him so much in Season One when he tells John that his hat is annoying. (Seriously, we get that you’re a country musician. You know what country musicians didn’t wear stupid hats at all times? Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and every single person who made it a legitimate genre of music.) Joan and Piers trash Clint Black for a while, which I’m cool with. Brett wonders if John can go after Lil Jon, if it comes to that. John makes vague promises, and Piers presses for specifics. John responds with more vagueness.
