A&E’s “Breakout Kings” — A Pre-Review

Jimmi Simpson is really the breakout character (no pun intended).  Best known as Liam McPoyle on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, he plays Lloyd, a brilliant behaviorist with no social skills and a gambling problem.  And he did something that landed him with a 25-year sentence, but he doesn’t like to talk about it.  Simpson is really funny here – the “abrasive genius” is a well-worn trope, but unlike Dr. House, Lloyd doesn’t have any natural charm to blunt his awkwardness.  He’s distinctly creepy and unsettling.  One of my favorite bits in the pilot has him proving a possible conspirator’s innocence with a fart.
