I think that 1996 Widmore thought the journal would help him find the Island again, or at least give some insight into the Hanso lineage. I’m telling you, there’s a reason why Magnus and Avlar both found their destinies there. Of course, what we know now is that the Journal would most likely not have helped with the Island, since it was discovered fifteen years before the Black Rock ran aground. Still, Widmore would have known of the Black Rock and thought the journal could have been his ticket back.
