And you have to wonder how it is that Magnus Hanso met his Smokey fate on the very same Island where his great-grandson would one day set up an ongoing research project. Just how did the Dharma Initiative choose the Island? Most of what we’ve seen of Dharma turned out to be research into the unique nature of the Island. It’s hard to believe that their original goal was just to breed some polar bears and look at plant samples. And when you think about it, the fact that they were consistently able to get people to the Island without incident means that they knew something was going on. Dharma built a sonic death fence to keep Smokey out, and I think we all know that Smokey would have killed everybody long before they’d worked out how to keep him away. Somebody who knows a great deal about the Island helped them work all this out. Was it Jacob? Was it a time-traveler? Was it somebody who came unstuck in time and found themselves in their younger self?
