I know that’s been largely assumed up until now, but his actions were ambiguous enough that they could be interpreted as service either Jacob or Smokey. Also, Look-a-Locke indicates that he can only take the shape of somebody who’s dead. So when we saw Walt running through the jungle in Seasons Two and Three, he was not actually a smoke monster.
