As the Lockelganger explains, these are the candidates – Jacob was looking for somebody to take over for him. I don’t know that we can believe anything he says, but the fact that we are looking at Jacob’s actual list is blowing my mind.

He gives Sawyer three options. He can do nothing, and see what happens. He can accept the job as the new Jacob and protect the Island “from nothing”. Or, they can leave the Island. Together. Sawyer chooses to leave.
