LOST Revisited: 6-4 “The Substitute” (Feb 17)

I’ll take the giant revelations in the order that they come, but I really think that this is one of the most important episodes in the overall story. How long do you think they’ve been bursting to show us that cave? And as a sidenote, this is one of very few episodes in the show’s history in which neither Jack nor Kate appear.

We open in Timeline X, where Locke returns home. The universe dumps on him, with his lift breaking down so he faceplants into the lawn. And then the sprinklers. He is breaking my heart here, but then Helen runs out of the house! Oh man, I love Katie Sagal. Of course, I keep thinking of her as Leela from Futurama. In Timeline X, they’re together, and they’re getting married in October. Hey, here’s a weird thing. Flight 815 crashed in late September. If you were getting married in a month, you’d probably say “next month” instead of always calling it “October”. You know, to emphasize how soon it’s coming. Is it possible that it isn’t September in Timeline X? But I’m getting ahead of myself. Helen wants a simple wedding – her parents and Locke’s dad. Locke’s dad!
