Anyway, Dogen explains that he uses a translator so that be can “remain separate from the people” that he’s in charge of. That’s a pretty good idea, actually. He also says that he was brought to the Island, like everybody else. I like his choice of words here – being “brought” to the Island implies a loss of free will. Nobody chooses to go to the Island. (Well, except the Dharma Initiative, but even then, they heard a lot of lies before committing.) So there aren’t accidents – Flight 815 was brought to the Island, just as Flight 316 was, and just as the Black Rock was.
