LOST Revisited: The Post-Mortem, Part 1

Now, I’ll acknowledge that Walt deserved better – his story really needed some closure and lots of explanation. Granted, there were logistic issues to get past, including the fact that Malcolm David Kelley selfishly elected to continue aging and growing. But I don’t think there was a place for it in the final season. There was nobody left in the cast who cared whether or not Walt was special, and Benry was the only one who had any insight into the topic. There wasn’t a good way to address it. Yes, it should have been dealt with, maybe back in Season Four with the resolution of Michael’s story. (And it’s worth noting that Season Four was the one shortened by the Writer’s Strike.) Years from now, that’s going to be the thing that frustrates future viewing audiences. Still, I don’t think an info-dump crammed into the last couple of episodes would have been terribly rewarding. I just think that the Walt story got pushed back, and then it was too late to resurrect it in any convincing way. It’s an irritation, but certainly not a fatal flaw.
