Mireille Enos plays Sarah, and there aren’t many female characters like her on television. She’s not emotionally closed-off, she’s not so devoted to her work that she doesn’t have time for a personal life, she’s not a secret badass with a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, and she’s not too emotionally invested in the case because, dammit, she has a kid of her own. None of the clichés about women on crime shows apply here. It’s a subtle performance of a complete character – not since Beadie and Kima on The Wire have we seen such a well-developed female in the genre.
