Mad Men Round Table: Season 3 – “Seven Twenty Three”

“You’re right. And why would I think that has anything to do with me? It’s three years, Don! What’s the matter? You don’t know where you’re going to be in three years.”

At which point, a speechless Don left the room and left the house, drink in hand, and headed out into the night to try and figure out where he lost control and how he’d get it back.

With Don, its about control. Period. He loves a situation where he’s in control. Wonder why he absolutely destroyed Peggy and Pete Campbell when they dared cash-in even the slightest bit of loyalty by asking to be assigned the Hilton account? Because he can still control them. Wonder why, as he signed his contract, he said he wished to never see Roger Sterling again? Control. The “controlled” Don Draper is the man from the noir movie genre of the 50s and 60s. The “out of control” Don Draper is more like …well …you and me.
