And then it happened.  The kids greeted him with hugs and probably could have knocked him over if they’d tried.  When Don tried to sneak back out to the car for his hat, Betty stopped him.  In that instant, he forgot about the mistress waiting for him in the dusk of early evening, who had to sneak away under cover of the eventual darkness that fell.  Betty demanded he open the drawer, saying she’d respected his privacy long enough.  Once the proverbial cat was out of the bag, Don managed “I can explain”, only to get zinged with “Oh, I know you can.  You’re a very gifted storyteller.”
