On the opposite end of the spectrum, we got a blast from the past (I mean, farther in the past), in the form of Don’s season one regular hook up, Midge. She was the beatnik/hippie/ free spirit Don would have lots of no-strings nooners with, back when he was all over the place with his sex life. I’d have rather seen Rachel Menken, and what kind of wrench she might have thrown into his current situation, but que sera sera.
Midge certainly did a good job of seeming like she just happened to run into Don; I bought it. After a few minutes of playing dumb, she convinced him to come downtown and meet her husband, and maybe buy a painting. It became obvious right away that “husband” might as well have been code for “pimp”. What a sad, pathetic creepy scene with both of these heroin addicts trying to beg for money without actually begging. But once Don gives Harry $10 to get groceries for dinner and he runs out of the apartment, Midge drops her pretenses. She tells Don he’ll put that right in his arm. Then, Don asks her what heroin’s like. Her answer is pretty straighforward: “Like drinking a hundred bottles of whiskey while someone licks your tits”. OK, then!
