It’s interesting to see how everybody’s reacting, both to the state of the company and Don’s letter. Pete’s shrill anger is kind of funny, actually. It’s always weird to see him stand up to Don, and he comes unhinged so quickly. Bert reacts with pretty serious fatalism – it almost seems like he’s just going to go home and never come back. Lane takes it almost in stride. It’s not that he doesn’t take it seriously, but on some level he’s thinking “Yeah, that’s about right.” Lane’s accustomed to having bad things happen to him. Roger brings his usual gallows humor to the table – it was interesting to see him revert to the persona we know and love after seeing how he agonized in private last week. And then there’s Joan. It’s almost scary how we’ve been pulled so far out of her head in recent weeks. We don’t even know if she terminated her pregnancy or not, and this week we only see her as strong and stoic, with no indication as to the toll this is taking on her.
