The centerpiece of this episode was our gal Joan. Mrs. Harris was about to celebrate her last day at Sterling Cooper with dinner for two with Greg followed by a surprise Bon Voyage from the steno pool (Thanks for spoiling everything, Mr. Hooker!) Her hopes for a lovely walk into the sunset were dashed when Greg showed up at home very late, very drunk and very much not the Chief of Surgery. Joan would have to keep working while Greg regrouped; too bad she’s already quit.
Her last day dawned and in swooped the Joan we’ve loved since the pilot; re-emerging to charm the visitors from Putnam, Powell & Lowe who’d come to check in on their most recent acquisition and make some changes. Powell (aka “guy from The Nanny“) showed up with a snotty little yes man and his new protege, Guy Mackendrick. So much for Bert Cooper’s idea that Don would be offered an “umbrella” position overseeing both London and New York.
