Mad Men Roundtable: “The Suitcase”

When the twosome head to a bar to catch the fight, a lesser show might take this chance to have a very unlikely, ill-advised hookup.  But here, Peggy tells Don how everybody thinks she slept with him to get her job, and when he says he has to keep rules at work, she lets him know she knows about Allison, then tells him her mother thinks he was responsible for her pregnancy.  She also admits that she tries not to think about the baby but it comes up out of nowhere; in places like playgrounds.

The unraveling that follows is almost like a really dark episode of a sitcom, but with more puking.  While Don’s throws up everything he ate that week,  Peggy hears Duck calling for her and catches him about to defecate in Roger’s office, which he thinks is Don’s, complete with a very audible fart.  Charming.  She’s trying to escort him out discreetly, but Don sees them and says “you don’t belong here.”  These two have never, ever been friends, or even respected each other as colleagues.  A fight ensues that’s essentially over Peggy’s honor after Duck calls her “just another whore.”  Once again, Peggy chooses to stay with Don, who asks her for a drink.  He says he has to make a phone call that he knows is going to be bad.  She obliges, only to end up with Don’s head in her lap while she drinks it and he sleeps.
