Mad Men

Mad Men Roundtable: “The Suitcase”

The spectre of Anna Draper shows up, Samsonite in hand, to smile at Don.  And then, the sun’s up.  Don comes to, pulls out the number and dials the phone.  When Stephanie says “she’s gone”, Don barely holds it together (much like Peggy earlier), and says he’s coming out to make the arrangements, but Anna’s donated her body to science.  (“She wanted to go to UCLA medical school tuition free.”)  When Don looks up and sees Peggy staring at him, he gulps in air and sobs, which is something we’ve never really seen from him.  He says he just lost “the only person in the world who really knew me,”  and lets Peggy comfort him a bit.  This isn’t suave Don Draper anymore; this is a lost little boy named Dick Whitman.
