Lone Star — This looks really appealing, and we can’t quite put our finger on why. The creator is an unknown quantity – Kevin Killen’s only other credit is writing The Beaver, which is that Mel Gibson comedy that’s never going to see the light of day. The lead, James Wolk, has never been in anything that we’ve seen. But we’re pretty excited about this drama focusing on a con man leading two lives. Early reviews have lauded the complex storytelling and the forward momentum of the series, and the original pitch was “Dallas without the cheese”. It’s got us intrigued, so we’re going to check it out, even though Monday is turning into a DVR-busting programming pileup. (Premieres September 20, FOX)
