The Best Shows on TV

TV’s Moments of Joy: The Fife Corps

Growing Pains: Those wacky Seavers often fought, but they also loved. And they have the Very Special Episodes to prove it. “The Best is ready to begin…Baby rain or shine, all the time, we’ve got each other, sharing the laughter and love.”

Silver Spoons: Sure, it’s great that Ricky’s newfound dad is so rich that they have a train that goes through the living room and a video arcade. But is that what’s really important? “Taking the time each day, to learn all about those things you just can’t buy.”

Webster: “Never thought forever was the best I could do, then came you.” Translation: I was thinking of leaving until someone dropped this kid on our doorstep. Now I guess I’ll give it a shot. Good for you, George Papadapolous! I think I will, too!

Perfect Strangers: This is the self-help mother load. I’m so motivated to go find my long-lost goat herding cousin, I can’t tell you! “No matter what the odds are this time, nothing’s gonna stand in my way…my life and my dreams, and nothin’s gonna stop me now!” Do the Myposian dance of joy with me, won’t you?

Alice: I just sing along with this one, wink in the rear view mirror and I’m good for the day. “There’s a new girl in town, and she’s lookin’ good!”

Angie: Inspirational words from a short-lived show about an Italian girl who married a WASP-y guy. “Love it seeks, love it finds, love it conquers, love it binds” all set to a disco beat!

227: I think this one intends to make you appreciate your family, but it also sounds a little ominous. “There’s no place like home, with your family around you, you’re never alone.” Really? Never?! Yikes!

Golden Girls: Now, I know for sure that this one was a song years before it was a TV theme, but it was just like it was written for those wacky cheesecake-eating broads…and me! “If you threw a party, invited everyone you knew, you would see the biggest gift would be from me and the card attached would say thank you for being a friend.” Aw!

Family Ties: Elyse and Steven Keaton were the coolest hippy parents ever, and their love is a model for all those who have come since, don’t you think? I don’t care if this lyric is a grammatical nightmare! And there ain’t no nothin’ we can’t love each other through, what would we do baby, without us? Shalalala… ” (Sit Ubu sit. Good dog! Woof!) I cannot be the only one who adds that last part.

BJ and The Bear: I’m gonna go ahead and guess not as many of you remember this little series, which starred Greg Evigan and a chimp named Bear. But, I couldn’t resist this lyric, which explained how BJ McKay, who is a cross-country trucker, viewed his transient lifestyle. “New Dreams and better scenes, and best of all I don’t pay property tax!” A valuable life lesson in this dismal economy, don’t you think?

Eight is Enough: Up until Brothers & Sisters premiered, there was no family I wanted to join more than the Bradford clan of Sacramento, CA. I mean, who can resist, when “there’s a plate of homemade wishes on the kitchen window sill”?

Valerie (aka The Hogan Family): Now this one just makes me choke up and smile through the tears of joy. “Life is such a sweet insanity, the more you learn the less you know, in the heart of every family, there’s a love that starts by letting go…there’s a love that’s waiting there for you, through the years.” Must hug children, right now…

One Day at a Time: Well, the show’s title is basically a shout-out to AA, so the theme song is, of course, an affirmation. Sweet, simple, to the point, and you can dance to it. “This is it (this is it). This is life, the one you get, so go and have a ball!” Thanks, Bonnie Franklin, I think I will!
