The episode opens with a filmstrip about Careers in Science, and specifically Jonas Venture’s space station, Gargantua-1. We see Rusty playing with cowboy figures, and then we cut to the shuttle that’s bringing Doc, Brock, and the boys into space. Hank and Dean are fighting, and then after getting yelled at, Dean vomits inside his helmet.
–I like the filmstrip opening – it’s the first real indication of the Venture-verse’s retro-futurism. This sequence is also our first look at Jonas Venture, the first glimpse of Doc’s childhood, and in the shuttle, Dean references the Giant Boy Detective series for the first time. Also a nice touch is their various levels of protection. The boys are in spacesuits with helmets on, Doc has no helmet, and Brock is wearing a hoodie.
