“I’ve seen my only real friend die. I’ve seen a giant penny roll over a guy dressed like a rainbow. I’ve seen the Donkey Kong kill screen. I’ve seen attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion.” – 21
At the Venture Compound, Sgt. Hatred takes offense when Brock tells the boys not to play football in the house – that’s his job now. In the Cocoon, 21 has a little bit of a breakdown, thinking about how much of his life he’s given up in the service of the Monarch. Dr. Girlfriend is sympathetic and supportive.
–Cool dynamics here. Sgt. Hatred really bristles at the way Brock naturally steps into bodyguard mode. 21 and Dr. Mrs. are awesome here, too. The Monarch’s obsessions are wearing on them, and Dr. Mrs. The Monarch has such a great line – “We’re supposed to just forget that we make people die. But when it hits home, it’s hard.” This show is very much about the effects that the insanity depicted can have on those involved. Just because people dress like butterflies or once stabbed Hitler to death, they’re still people and the life takes its toll. The both of them seem exhausted here, and it’s an excellent bonding moment. I think this might be the only time anybody, except for the counselor at Henchman group therapy, has called 21 by his real name – Gary.
