When we’re talking awesome, you have to give the edge to a series that features a character named Awesome. Captain Awesome, to be exact. Chuck is back, and a grateful nation sighs with relief.
When last we saw Chuck, oh, so long ago, everybody’s favorite Nerd Herder-turned intelligence asset was in danger of becoming obsolete and thus, dead. This season begins with Chuck thinking that the development of the new Intersect means that he gets to retire from the spy game and start enjoying life again.
With the second season premiere, Chuck managed to amp up both the action and the comedy. It doesn’t seem like that should be possible, as that would require Chuck to actually physically expand somehow. There are several action scenes that are as intense as anything you’d see in a straight espionage show, and many of those scenes involve karate fights with guest-star Michael Clarke Duncan. (True fact: The Green Mile would have been a much better movie if the second act had consisted entirely of karate fights.) Over at Chuck’s day job, anarchy reigned at the Buy More as Morgan was enlisted to find the new assistant manager. The interviews were hilarious, eventually devolving into a trip to the Thunderdome.
