Big Bang Theory–Now here’s a show that is putting together the pieces of a great traditional sitcom, and making it look as fun as it probably is. The ensemble of four geeky college professors and their cute neighbor occasionally expands for guest stars like Sarah Gilbert and Sarah Rue, but it’s really this central unit that is firing on all cylinders. The breakout star is Jim Parsons as Dr. Sheldon Cooper, an absolute social misfit who is far too intelligent for his own good. The show’s writing is witty and smart, and doesn’t get so nerdy as to alienate those who might not get every joke, but rewards pop culture, sci-fi and comic book enthusiasts accordingly. And it’s a sweet show at its core, with characters that you root for to succeed, even though watching them bumble along is so much fun.
